Gore's Nobel will not change US climate policy

The Bush Administration has applauded former United States vice-president Al Gore for winning the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in creating awareness about global warming, but said it would not change the government's policy on climate issue.

"Of course, he's (President George Bush) happy for (former) vice president Gore, happy for the International Panel on Climate Change scientists, who also shared the Peace Prize. Obviously it's an important recognition and we're sure the vice president is thrilled," White House Spokesman Tony Fratto said, adding he was not aware of any plans by Bush to place a congratulatory call to his former presidential rival.

Gore, who lost the 2000 presidential election to Bush, has since transformed himself into an avid environment campaigner, even winning an Oscar for his documentary "An inconvenient truth", a film about global warming.

Asked if the recognition bestowed on Gore would spur a change in the climate policy of Bush, who has consistently refused to sign the Kyoto Protocol which would require putting a cap on greenhouse gas emissions, Fratto replied, "No."

"I don't see it that way at all. No," the spokesman said.

Fratto praised Gore and the IPCC, headed by Indian scientist R K Pachauri, for helping to bring attention to global warming, but added that the difficult part was to implement "practical" climate change strategies which allow continued development.

"Obviously vice president Gore has helped to bring attention to climate change. The IPCC scientists have done remarkable work to bring scientific rigor to the questions surrounding climate change.

"And obviously the next step for -- and really the most difficult step is implementing climate change strategies that are effective and practical, and that allow for continued economic development and for countries to do the work that they need to do to lift people out of poverty," the spokesman said.
