CAG detects irregularities in CWG

August 02, 2011 22:19 IST

In further embarrassment to Congress, the Comptroller and Auditor General is understood to have rapped the Sheila Dikshit government in Delhi for irregularities in certain contracts related to the Commonwealth Games.

The CAG criticism comes on top of sharp indictment of the prime minister's office on appointment of Suresh Kalmadi as Organising Committee Chairman of the CWG held in October last year.

The report, yet to be tabled in Parliament, has reportedly pointed out that Spage Age, one of the disqualified firms bidding for street lighting was declared qualified "irregularly" after it made a plea to the chief minister.

It also reportedly found overspending by the Delhi government and civic agencies to the tune of over Rs 100 crore over streetscaping and an excess expenditure of Rs 31.07 crore on street lighting by Municipal Corporation of Delhi, New Delhi Municipal Council and Public Works Department.

Minister of State in the PMO V Narayanasamy said the CAG report, after being tabled in Parliament, will be examined by the Public Accounts Committee.
