The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday made light of Rahul Gandhi's comments that he wants to play a larger role in the Congress or the government, saying he cannot be absolved of the present "mess" in the UPA dispensation "as he is already involved in decision-making in both his party and government".

"The BJP would like to categorically state this attempt to dispel the notion that the mess created by the Congress-led Manmohan Singh government has nothing to do with Rahul Gandhi is completely unacceptable as no decision is ever taken in the government without 10, Janpath (Sonia Gandhi) or Rahul getting into it," party spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy told PTI.

He said nobody having an iota of political sense would believe this claim of the Congress.

"Any attempt to absolve Rahul Gandhi of the economic mess or otherwise would be a fallacy," Rudy said.

At the same time, the BJP said if Rahul Gandhi "formally becomes" a part of the government, people would get to see his abilities or the lack of it.

"Possibly, it would help the country to understand and also will also end the speculation about Rahul Gandhi's capacity and his administrative and political ability which many have been wanting to see," Rudy said.

He pointed out that Rahul Gandhi already occupies a high office of the general secretary of the Congress and no political party would have any objection if he occupies any high position in the government. However, it is for the Congress to decide, Rudy said.
