A magisterial inquiry was ordered on Thursday into the alleged rape of a mentally retarded girl by two army jawans and the subsequent ransacking by soldiers of a police outpost at Sapekata in Assam's Kokrajhar district.

Police has registered a criminal case against the two jawans from the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry based at Sapekata, official sources said in Kokrajhar.

The jawans reportedly went to the residence of a private medical practitioner Lonkeswar Koch of Matiapara village under Gossaigaon sub-division on Wednesday night and found Sahela Basumatary (21), who was undergoing treatment for mental problems, alone in the house.

They raped her repeatedly for three hours before Koch arrived, along with some villagers, and later filed an FIR with the Sapekata police outpost.

On hearing about the FIR, some members of the JKLI gheraoed the police outpost and ransacked it. Major General Kohli, General Officer Commanding, 21 Mountain Division, later visited the spot to assess the damage.

Gossaigaon Sub-Divisional Officer Alok Kumar Saharia said a magisterial inquiry had been ordered and the report would be submitted within three days.

Incensed, over 200 people belonging to various communities and organisations such as the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) and the All Bodo Women Welfare Tribe staged a protest march.
