Four Pakistani soldiers were killed and three others wounded on Thursday when an army patrol was attacked by unidentified assailants in a thickly forested area along the Line of Control in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

The army patrol, on a routine scouting of the LoC along the Buttle sector of Jajira area, detected some "unknown assailants", on the Pakistani side and they opened fire at the soldiers, military spokesman Maj Gen Athar Abbas said.

Two soldiers were killed on the spot while two others succumbed to their injuries in hospital, Abbas said, adding that the assailants attacked using small arms.

The army rushed in reinforcements to counter the attack and exchange of fire between the soldiers and the assailants continued till late in the evening on Thursday, Abbas said.

Due to the remote location of the encounter site, nothing can be confirmed about the incident till a proper investigation has been conducted, Abbas said.

However, the area in the jungle from where the assailants were attacking is located on the Pakistani side of the LoC, the spokesperson added.
