Mild tremor hits Maharashtra

A mild tremor was experienced in Pune and parts of Maharashtra with its epicentre at Koyna dam region in Satara district, Met office said on Wednesday morning.

The tremor, felt past midnight at 00:40 a.m., lasted for around seven seconds and measured 4.2 on the Richter scale, it added.

According to sources at Koyna, there was no damage to the dam where a power generation plant of state electricity distribution company Mahavitaran is located.

A large number of scared citizens in Pune and other parts of Western Maharashtra, who were awakened due to the shock, called up newspaper offices to know the magnitude of the quake.

Police said there were no reports of any kind of damage to life or property.

The Koyna dam region is considered an earthquake-prone zone. The revived monsoon has resulted in considerable rise in the water level of the dam over the last couple of days, sources said.
