One person was killed and 50 others wounded, when people in several localities of Srinagar [Images] and other towns defied curfew and clashed with the police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force on Sunday.

Police said CRPF troops opened fire at a stone-pelting mob at Buchwara locality of Srinagar on Sunday evening, resulting in on the spot death of a 65-year-old Ghulam [Images] Qadir Hajam and critical injury to his son, Mohammad Ayub Hajam.

Four more persons were injured in police firing at Zanpa Kadal in the old city on Sunday evening. The injured were taken to hospital for treatment.

The local news channels in the meantime have been told to immediately stop telecast of their news and current affairs programmes.

This follows a directive by the district magistrate of Srinagar. "The DM has issued orders to stop with immediate effect, the telecasting of all news and other items, which are inflammatory in nature and thereby disturbing the peace and tranquillity of general public."
