Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar | June 28, 2006 01:13 IST

On a first fact finding visit to Kashmir after being appointed as European Union envoy, Emma Nicholson arrived in Srinagar on Tuesday, heading a five-member delegation on a three-day visit.

Immediately after her arrival Nicholson, along with the delegation, met the state deputy chief minister Muzaffar Hussain Beigh. Later she also called on former chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed at his residence.

The delegation will call on the state governor Lt Gen (Retd) S K Sinha on Tuesday night for a detailed briefing on the latest situation in Kashmir.

The delegation is also scheduled to meet leaders of the separatist All Parties Hurriyat Conference on Wednesday. It will also call on senior civil and security force officers to get familiar with the latest security situation in the valley.

After her visit, Nicholson, who is a member of the European Parliament and vice-president of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, will submit a detailed report to the EU.
