June 27, 2006 17:09 IST

As many as 114 Sri Lankan Tamil refugees on Monday night reached Tamil Nadu's Rameswaram island from Sri Lanka, police said.

Following the tense situation in back home, 10,000 Sri Lankan Tamils were waiting to come to Tamil Nadu, the refugees, who arrived in ten boats, said.

The refugees were sent to the Mandapam camp after police verification.

Meanwhile, a batch of 73 refugees was shifted from the Mandapam camp near Rameswaram (which is where they are usually given accommodation) to the Kottapattu camp near Trichirapalli, 350 km from Chennai.

The refugees arrived at Mandapam recently from Trincomallee and other places in Northern Sri Lanka.
