January 09, 2006 15:32 IST

In a new twist to the phone tapping controversy,Bharatiya Janata Party Monday alleged that the telephones of many of its senior leaders, including Leader of Opposition Lal Kishenchand Advani were tapped during the Volcker controversy.

"According to the information, many telephones of several senior party leaders were tapped during the Volcker controversy," party spokesman Prakash Javadekar told PTI.

He said that the government should come clean on the issue. Party vice presidentVenkaih Naidu had made similar allegation in Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh Sunday.

Earlier, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had joined Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh in alleging that their phones were being tapped.

BJP deputy leader in Lok Sabha V K Malhotra had demanded a probe by a joint parliamentary committee into the telephone tapping allegations.
