NDA boycotts Parliament, stages dharna

August 08, 2006 12:21 IST

National Democratic Alliance members on Tuesday boycotted Parliament and staged a dharna in its premises to protest
against Speaker Somnath Chatterjee whom they accused of suppressing the voice of the Opposition in the House.

Wearing black gags, NDA members, led by Leader of Opposition Lal Kishenchand Advani, staged a sit-in at the main gate of Parliament at around 11 am and stayed away from proceedings of the House.

After the leakage of the Pathak Authority report on the Iraqi-oil-for-food scam rocked Parliament, deputy leader
of the Opposition in the House Vijay Kumar Malhotra on Monday announced that the NDA would hold a dharna to protest "the suppression of the voice of the Opposition in the House by the Speaker."

Meanwhile, Chatterjee appealed to opposition NDA to call off the boycott.
