Bhat, an advocate by profession, joined the NC in 1977 and won the Lal Chowk seat in the recently held civic polls.

Another NC leader, Ghulam Ahmad Hajam, was also declared elected unopposed to the post of deputy mayor. Hajam won from Zadibal in Srinagar.

The NC has 40 members in the 68-member Srinagar Municipal Corporation.

A front runner for the post was gunned down by suspected militants last month.
