Sonia visits Himachal flood-hit areas

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi [Images] on Wednesday visited flood-hit areas of Kinnaur district in Himachal Pradesh [Images].

She spoke to the victims, including some stranded tourists.

Sonia, who was accompainied by Union home minister Shivraj Patil [Images] and Chief Minister V B Singh, was briefed about the damage by an official at Rekong Peo, Kinnaur.

She told reporters on her arrival at the helipad that roads and bridges in the area had been badly affected and the people were worried about their crops.

About 250 tourists were stranded. While many had been evacuated, the state government would shift the others soon, she added.

Sonia promised help to the affected people, especially farmers.

The home minister would take stock of the losses incurred by flood affected people.
