A catastrophe was averted on Tuesday when the Jammu and Kashmir [Images] police detected an explosive-laden car in the busy Karan Nagar area of Srinagar [Images], foiling militants' plan to set off a massive blast, official sources said.

The car, parked outside a private clinic, was noticed by a police patrol party and two LPG cylinders laden with explosives were recovered by the bomb disposal squad from it, the sources said.

They said the whole area was cordoned off by the police immediately after the detection of the car bomb.

The bomb disposal squad of the local police was informed and the bomb was neutralised.
