PM in AP tomorrow to meet farmers

June 30, 2004 18:56 IST

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will arrive in Hyderabad on Thursday on a day's visit to Andhra Pradesh to meet farmers.

Andhra Pradesh has been rocked by a series of suicides by farmers unable to pay their debts. The Congress, which wrested power in the state from the Telugu Desam Party, had made the suicides its main poll plank in the assembly election.

The prime minister is scheduled to visit two villages -- one each in Kurnool and Mehboobnagar districts -- where he will meet the bereaved families.

The prime minister is also likely to hand over compensations, announced by the state government, to the dead farmers' families, official sources said.
