Buddha favours death for rapist-murderer June 25, 2004 16:00 IST West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Friday said he favoured capital punishment for Dhananjay Chatterjee, convicted for rape and murder of a school girl in Kolkata in 1990.
"In this case, I am in favour of death sentence. I mean death by hanging," he told reporters in Kolkata. The chief minister's statement came a day after the Communist Party of India (Marxist) secretary Anil Biswas called for evolving a consensus to ban death sentence by hanging.
