I was misquoted on Mulayam: Rahul

July 29, 2004 19:43 IST

Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP from Amethi, on Thursday said his comments on the Mulayam Singh government in Uttar Pradesh had been "misquoted".

"My reference there was that the people of Amethi are not getting electricity, which I said was not under my control... I cannot do anything. It is under the control of the state government," said the younger Gandhi, who is on a weeklong visit to his constituency.

"That was what I said and you (media) misquoted me, making it appear as a fight..." he added.

He maintained that "my focus is Amethi".

Asked if he was supportive of the special package for development demanded by Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, Gandhi said he was nor aware of the details. "I am not qualified to speak on this issue. It is a matter between the state government and the government in Delhi," he said, adding, "I have other focuses such as Amethi."
