Widespread showers in Himachal; farmers rejoice

July 28, 2004 20:28 IST

As monsoon played truant in most parts of North India, rains lashed several parts of Himachal Pradesh since Tuesday evening breaking a month-long dry spell and bringing cheers to farmers.

Kangra, Shimla, Mandi, Kullu, Hamirpur and Chamba received heavy rains, Meteorological Centre Director
Manmohan Singh said.

Sujanpurtira in Hamirpur and Dharamsala in Kangra recorded 90 mm of rains followed by Nogrota Surian and Bhoranj (60 mm each), he said.

Churah and Kheri had 56.2 mm and 54.6 mm of rains respectively while Kullu, Sundernagar and Nurpur had 50 mm of rains.

The rains brought cheers to farmers and apple growers who were facing drought-like conditions.

The rainfall was deficient in most parts of the state between June one and July 28.
