Lakhs pay homage to Kumbakonam victims

Thousands of students in government, private and aided-schools in Tamil Nadu on Monday paid homage to the 90 school children killed in Friday's fire in Kumbakonam's Sri Krishna Primary School.

No classes were conducted in any school across the state.

In some minority-run institutions, students lit candles and prayed for the dead.

In Kumbakonam, processions were taken out by school students. District Collector Dr J Radhakrishnan and Director of School Education, Paramasivan, participated in a prayer meeting.

The state cabinet observed two minutes' silence in the memory of the dead children.

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and former deputy prime minister Lal Kishenchand Advani is slated to visit Kumbakonam on Tuesday.
