China confirms first SARS case in 2004

Within days of the World health Organisation warning that SARS would be back in 2004, China revealed that one of its citizens has contracted the dreaded virus. It is the first known case of SARS in the country since July 2003.

The 32-year-old man, who works in the television industry, is based in Guangdong province in the southeastern coastal region. He underwent several tests before the health ministry confirmed that he had SARS, which had created a major scare in China, Hong Kong and East Asia in 2003. Travel to Asia had dropped drastically after the SARS outbreak.
