Railways presents Godhra carnage
report in Lok Sabha

March 13, 2003 21:58 IST

The Indian Railways on Thursday tabled a report in the Lok Sabha on the Godhra train tragedy placing the final death toll at 59, three grievously injured and 21 with simple injuries.

The report, tabled by Railway Minister Nitish Kumar, said, "On the day of the ghastly incident, February 27 last year, even the reserved coaches were jam-packed to such an extent that the ticket checking staff could not enter some of the coaches for checking the passengers," it said.

Out of the 59 dead, 19 remained unidentified. The Gujarat government is conducting forensic tests to determine their identity, of which reports relating to 12 have been received.

Referring to reports in 'some quarters' that the Railways did not reveal the full details of the passengers travelling in Coach S-6, which was gutted by fire, the report said the Railway administration had all along been transparent in giving information.

"Keeping in view the statements made in some quarters, the Indian Railways have made special efforts to collect information about the passengers who had secured reservation for travel by that train by making personal contact with them and their relatives on the addresses given in the requisition slips submitted by them at the reservation counter while asking for reservation accommodation.

"This", the report said, "was a massive exercise. More than 150 railway officials worked round the clock for days together at a stretch, travelling to even far-flung and remote places to contact either the passengers themselves or their members or neighbours at the addresses given in the requisition slips.

The report said that despite efforts from the railway staff, it has not been possible to contact or trace some of the persons or their relatives or neighbours on account of various reasons, including incorrect address and illegible address.

The Railways said subsequent information from the results of the DNA tests had revealed that 58 bodies of people were extracted from the coach and the police authorities duly made Panchnamas. The state government officials then handed over identified bodies to the next of kin.
