AP heat wave toll mounts to 884 Syed Amin Jafri Hyderabad | June 01, 2003 20:45 IST The toll due to the oppressive heat wave in Andhra Pradesh soared to 884 on Sunday evening, with 89 deaths in the past 24 hours. State Relief Commissioner D C Rosaiah told rediff.com that the state faced severe heat wave conditions for the 17th day in a row. The relief commissioner said district authorities have appealed to the people to stay indoors from noon to evening. The Hyderabad Meteorological Centre said severe heat wave conditions continue to prevail in southern coastal districts -- Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and Nellore -- as well as in parts of interior Telangana region. Hyderabad, too, recorded this season's highest temperature of 43.9 degrees Celsius on Sunday. Isolated showers occurred in some places in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema region. Meteorological Centre Director C V V Bhadram said the heat wave warning has been renewed for another 48 hours.
