End infiltration, US envoy to Pakistan

January 24, 2003 00:34 IST

US Ambassador to Pakistan Nancy Powell on Thursday asked Islamabad to implement its promise of ending infiltration of terrorists into Jammu and Kashmir.

A declaration of ceasefire along the Line of Control can help in reducing the hostility between India and Pakistan, APP news agency quoted her as saying at a meeting of the American Business Council in Karachi.

"Those of us who live in South Asia understand the enormity of the challenge of breaking this stalemate. I cannot overstate the importance of all parties working to end the culture of violence that afflicts Kashmir," she said.

There is less tension between New Delhi and Islamabad due to the diplomatic efforts of India, Pakistan, the US and several other nations, she said.
