Shinde meets Maharashtra governor, stakes claim

January 17, 2003 16:44 IST

The newly elected head of the Democratic Front coalition and chief minister-designate, Sushilkumar Shinde, on Friday met Maharashtra Governor Mohammed Fazal and staked claim to form the government.

Shinde submitted a list of supporters with signatures of 148 members of the legislative assembly.

The list excluded five Peasants and Workers' Party MLAs who have decided to remain neutral and two Communist Party of India legislators, who have agreed to support from outside.

Fazal has given him 15 days to prove majority on the floor of the House.

Shinde, who succeeds Vilasrao Deshmukh, will be sworn-in chief minister at 1600 IST on Saturday.

He was elected head of the coalition at a meeting of DF legislators at Vidhan Bhavan on Friday morning.
