BJP MP Kirti Azad released from custody

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna | January 14, 2003 20:01 IST

Bharatiya Janata Party MP Kirti Azad was on Tuesday afternoon released on bail along with three others by a court in Darbhanga district.

The cricketer-turned-MP had been arrested late on Monday night in Darbhanga for vandalising the local office of the Bihar State Electricity Board during a demonstration in May 2001.

The demonstration was in protest against the meagre and erratic power supply.

On Tuesday, BJP workers disrupted traffic in Darbhanga district Tuesday to protest against Azad's arrest.

Sources in the district administration said BJP workers led by district party leaders had disrupted movement of trains since early Tuesday morning.

Azad, son of former Bihar chief minister Bhagwat Jha Azad, represents Darbhanga parliamentary constituency in the Lok Sabha.
