Forcible marriage case: Police fail to track Kanchan Mishra

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna | January 08, 2003 18:28 IST

The Bihar police have failed to track down Kanchan Mishra, a twice-married woman who was allegedly forced into wedlock with a criminal, within the stipulated time fixed by the National Commission for Women.

The NCW, which is probing the case, had directed the police last month to track down Kanchan Mishra within 10 days and arrest the criminal Sultan Mian.

But the Patna police have not yet traced Mishra nor have they been able to arrest Mian so far.

Police officials are tight-lipped on the matter.

An NCW team led by chairperson Purnima Advani had arrived in Patna on December 16, 2002. Advani held discussions with top officials, including Director General Of Police R R Prasad and Senior Superintendent of Police, Patna, Sunil Kumar. She had asked the police to find Mishra so that the truth could be established.

But the recent bandh and violence related to it, over the case of the killing of three youths in a fake encounter, came as a blessing in disguise for the police, who have sidelined the Kanchan Mishra issue completely.

The NCW had warned the police of stern action in case they are unable to trace Mishra within the given time frame.
