RJD agrees for CBI probe into 'encounter'

January 03, 2003 22:58 IST

The ruling Rashtriya Janata Dal has agreed for a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the alleged police encounter of three students in Patna, Bihar.

RJD leadership gave this assurance to Congress leader Manmohan Singh, party general secretary Oscar Fernandes said on Friday.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi had asked Singh to talk to RJD president Laloo Prasad Yadav on the issue.

Earlier in the day, Congress had ruled out withdrawal of support to the Rabri Devi government in the wake of the alleged encounter, but had made it clear that the incident was a "very serious" matter.
