Six persons stranded on Indo-Bangla border

M Chhaya in Kolkata | February 21, 2003 18:23 IST

Six persons, allegedly Bangladeshis trying to sneak back into their country after illegally entering India, have been caught on the border in West Bengal.

The 'intruders' are now stranded on no-man's land after the Indian and the Bangladeshi guards prevented them entering either territory on Thursday. A flag meeting between the Border Security Force and the Bangladesh Rifles also failed.

The BSF claims the six persons had entered India illegally a few days ago though the Hili border in South Dinajpur district. They had reportedly visited Ajmer Sharif in Rajasthan before returning to West Bengal to try and cross back into Bangladesh.

BSF commander D R Rathore said that the six Bangladeshis were stopped by the BDR from entering their territory and the group had to spend the night under the open sky at border pillar number 284/50-S.

They were supplied food and water by locals. The BSF claims the stranded people had admitted they were Bangladeshis.

This incident follows a similar incident on the issue of nationality of 213 people who were stranded on the border for seven days after neither India nor Bangladesh allowed them in.

Bangladesh allowed the group to return, but only after a tension-filled week of high drama and diplomatic maneuvering.
