Pakistan envoy named in FIR

February 07, 2003 17:49 IST

Pakistan's Charge d'Affaires Jaleel Abbas Gilani's name figures in the first information report filed after Thursday's arrest of two All-Party Hurriyat Conference activists in New Delhi.

Anjum Zamrooda Habib, chief of the Muslim Khawateen Markaz, a Hurriyat constituent, who was arrested along with Hurriyat spokesman Shabir Dar, confessed before special court Judge S N Dhingra that the Rs307,000 found in her possession was handed over to her by the Pakistan high commission to be passed on to the amalgam's chairman, Abdul Gani Bhat, as a nazrana.

The two -- booked under the Prevention of Terrorism Act -- were produced amidst tight security before the judge, who remanded them to 10 days of police custody.

The 23-party amalgam denied any involvement in the case and termed the police action as 'politically motivated'.

The Delhi police has sent its report to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The report will be finally sent to the external affairs ministry, as Gilani enjoys diplomatic immunity.
