Things out of control on Indo-Bangla border: Fernandes

February 05, 2003 19:21 IST

Defence Minister George Fernandes said on Wednesday that 'things have gone out of control' on the Indo-Bangla border over the issue of 213 Bangladeshi immigrants.

"There is tension at the border. It is unfortunate and additional personnel have been deployed from the BSF [Border Security Force] near the no man's land where the migrants are stranded," he said soon after inaugurating an international aero show in Banglalore.

India hopes that the issue will be sorted out soon, he added.

BSF personnel are in contact with the Red Cross Society to ensure that the migrants are not deprived of the basic necessities, he said.

"We have always rushed aid and humanitarian services when the need arises and will not back out this time as well," the minister added.

Fernandes said he has been deeply moved by the pictures of people stranded on the border.
