5 railway cops suspended for Bihar molestation incident

December 29, 2003 11:56 IST

Five Government Railway Policemen, including a sub-inspector, have been suspended in connection with the alleged molestation and eve-teasing of women artistes traveling by the Himgiri Express on December 23 night.

The policemen were suspended for dereliction of duty. The incident occurred when the train, traveling from Jammu to Kolkata, had halted at Patna junction.

Superintendent Railway Police Vinay Kumar told PTI on Monday that Sub-Inspector L K Das and the others had failed to inform senior officials about the molestation attempts and thrashing of the team leader, Balwant Thakur, who was heading the cultural troupe, which was going to participate in a youth festival in Kolkata.

Meanwhile, police raided the houses of Ashok Yadav and three others allegedly involved in the molestation incident.

Despite notices served on Ashok Yadav, a councillor of the Patna Municipal Corporation, and the others to appear before the Superintendent Railway Police to record their statements, none of them had turned up. The four are yet to be found.

Kumar said the GRP would also record the statements of the policemen who had travelled from Jammu to Varanasi in the same coach.
