'My son is in pain. How can I ignore him?'

Vijay Singh at G T Hospital, Mumbai | August 25, 2003 21:24 IST

It was supposed to be the family's day out.

Vijay Khandare, his wife and four-year-old son Ashwin were at the Gateway of India with three of their relatives.

They decided to have a family picture clicked by one of the many roving photographers who make a living taking instant pictures for tourists.

"Of a sudden," remembered Khandare, "there was this loud blast behind us. All six of us were injured."

In the rush to get them to a hospital, the family was separated.

Khandare managed to keep hold of his son; both he and Ashwin have been admitted to the Goculdas Tejpal Hospital near Dhobi Talao with injuries in the back caused by flying shrapnel. They have lost blood, but are not critically injured.

At the hospital, Khandare learnt that one of his relatives has been admitted to the St George Hospital nearby. But he had no clue where his wife is, or where his other two relatives are.

His son was crying in pain and though the doctors kept telling Khandare to rest -- "they assure me they will take good care of Ashwin" -- he kept getting up to soothe the little boy.

"Ashwin is frightened and hurt," Khandare said. "He is in pain. How can I ignore him? I just wish I could get some news of my wife."
