RJD leader gunned down in Patna
on eve of lathi rally

April 30, 2003 04:13 IST

RJD leader Raj Kumar Yadav, who had come to Patna to take part in Wednesday's lathi rally, was on Tuesday night gunned down in the heart of the town in what might have been a case of mistaken identity.

Senior Superintendent of Police Sunil Kumar told PTI that the assailants overtook Raj Kumar's car and indiscriminately fired at the vehicle near R-block roundabout, killing him on the spot.

Raj Kumar Yadav was a resident of the Khagaria district and a close aide of former MLA Ranvir Yadav.

Although the identity of the killers and their motive was not clear, police suspect that Ranvir Yadav's rivals might be behind the incident.

It is suspected that the assailants may have mistaken Raj Kumar for Ranvir Yadav, who may have been their target.
