Three SARS cases in Maharashtra

April 21, 2003 20:16 IST

Three persons of a family, including a girl who was to get married in Pune on Monday, have tested positive for SARS [Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome], Maharashtra Minister for Health Digvijay Khanvilkar said.

Stanley D'silva, his mother Vimla and sister Julie, who came to India three weeks ago, have been isolated in a ward of the Siddhartha Hospital, he said.

The family had visited Jakarta and Indonesia recently and had come to Pune for Julie's wedding, the minister said in Mumbai.

Stanley was admitted to the hospital on April 17 and the other two on April 19. Their samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune and they tested positive, Khanvilkar said.

Stanley was fine, while his mother and sister were on way to recovery, he added.
