Salman Khan's hit movie Dabangg grabbed eight awards at the Chevrolet Apsara Awards in Mumbai on Tuesday night.

Dabangg bagged awards in Best Film, Best Actor (Salman Khan), Best Female Singer (Mamta Sharma), Best Performance in Negative role (Sonu Sood), Best Female Debut (Sonakshi Sinha), Best Music (Sajid-Wajid), Best Dialogues (Abhinav Kashyap) and Best Male Singer (Rahat Fateh Ali Khan).

 

Sonakshi, who played the role of Rajjo in the film, tweeted about her win: 'back home with the loot. SO proud to be a part of Dabangg, you have NO idea!!! Dabangg Ho... ab so jao!'

Another film that almost equaled Dabangg's haul was Band Baaja Baraat, with six awards in categories like Best Editing (Namrata Rao), Best Art Director (T P Abid and Sonal Choudhry), Best Costume Design (Niharika Khan), Best Actress (Anushka Sharma), Best Debut Director (Maneesh Sharma) and Best Male Debut (Ranveer Singh).

The awards show saw a new category called the President honour for outstanding achievement in cinema.

The first recipients of these awards were the cast of Guzaarish -- Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan, and its director Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Meanwhile, veteran actor Dharmendra, who is acting with his sons Sunny and Bobby Deol in this week's release Yamla Pagla Deewana received the lifetime achievement award for completing 50 years in the Hindi film industry, from Shah Rukh Khan.

Arjun Rampal had reason to cheer as well. The hunk won Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Raajneeti.

'Just got back from the Apsara Awards, won for best supporting,Rajneethi. Nice way to start the year,it is the Producers guild award which makes it that much more special.Thank you the fraternity,' he tweeted after the show.
