'Indian workers are a satisfied lot'

December 10, 2004 10:45 IST

Employees in India are by and large a satisfied lot compared with their counterparts in the Asia Pacific region.

According to a study by Watson Wyatt Worldwide, a global human resources consulting firm, 71 per cent of surveyed employees are happy with their jobs and the work environment, which is 8 and 11 percentage points higher, respectively, than the Asia Pacific norms.

Around 67 per cent employees think their employers facilitate effective teamwork. This is 13 percentage points higher than the average for the region.

Like their Asian counterparts, Indians continue to consider compensation, supervision and training to be sore points.

Dissatisfaction with pay was listed as the number one reason for employees choosing to leave their company. However, only 39 per cent reported to be satisfied with their compensation and benefits.

Around 35 per cent feel they are paid fairly, compared with people with comparable jobs at other companies. However, 78 per cent employees believe their pay is linked to the company's performance.

"The relatively low overall satisfaction with compensation highlights the need for Indian employers to ensure that they keep up with this rapidly developing economy," said Sanjay Bharwani, country manager of Watson Wyatt India.

"Effective communication about how individual pay is determined and about companies' overall performance will become more and more important as the job market becomes more competitive," he added.

Interestingly, as the study points out, despite issues of compensation, it is job satisfaction and leadership that have the highest impact on employee commitment.

Around 83 per cent of Indian workers surveyed expressed confidence in the long-term success of their companies. 64 per cent said their company was a good place to work compared with others. 81 per cent intend to stay with their current employer for at least one more year.

74 per cent of employees said their work gives them a sense of personal achievement. Only 54 per cent have a clear understanding of their career paths available to them within their organisation. Around 72 per cent feel the amount of work they are required to do is reasonable.
