The UAE has decided to open labour offices in India and other countries to recruit workers in an effort to end the role of recruitment agencies.

The UAE and India have agreed to get rid of recruitment agencies by opening labour offices in India, Indian Minister for Overseas Affairs Vayalar Ravi said after a meeting with UAE Minister for Labour Ali bin Abdullah Al Kaabi.

The offices will also educate overseas workers about UAE's labour laws and customs before they travel to the country.

During their meeting, Al Kaabi apprised Ravi on the proposed six-year ceiling on the stay of unskilled labourers, which will be considered by labour ministers of the Gulf countries in
Riyadh next month.

Al Kaabi also revealed administrative measures taken by the ministry to deport those who provoked strikes, saying workers have no right to stage strikes for salary increase once they have signed labour contracts.

The definite term contract and the possibility of transfer of sponsorship after the expiry of the contract and scope for salary increment of Indian workers also figured in the discussions.

Ravi is on a three-day visit to the UAE as part of his Gulf tour, during which he also visited Bahrain.

The two ministers met in the backdrop of the MoU which was signed by India and UAE in January for the welfare of Indian workers in the UAE.
