Indian Railways plan to introduce mobile train communication on its A, B and C routes, Rajya Sabha was informed on Friday.

Of this, work on 3,200 route kilometre on Northern, North-Central, East-Central, Eastern and Northeast Frontier Railways have already been sanctioned and is under execution, Minister of State for Railways R Velu said in a written reply.

The work sanctioned on 3,200 RKM is likely to be completed by December, 2007, he said adding the scheme was being introduced following recommendations of the Railway Safety Review Committee which has been accepted by the ministry.

Replying to another question, Velu said cyber cafes have been set up at six stations, namely New Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Gorakhpur, Jhansi and Asansol. All of these have started functioning.

Besides, he said there are 19 more stations where Railway proposes to set up Cyber Cafes. They include Howrah, Sealdah, Sambalpur, Kharagpur, Bhubaneshwar, Puri, Rourkela, Ludhiana, Jammu Tawi, Lucknow, Agra, Mathura, Jaipur, Ajmer, Chandigarh, Abu Road, Varanasi and Amritsar.

Velu also informed the House that railway ministry was making efforts to have consensus view on restricting access to railway platforms, like the airports, by allowing entry only to bonafide passengers and banning entry of non-passengers.

He said the Standing Committee on Railways in its 21st Report (2005-06) on Terminal Facilities in Metropolitan Cities has recommended that only genuine passengers with the restricted number of accompanying persons should be allowed at the platforms as is being done in the case of airports.

However, he said no decision has been taken on this recommendation.
