Taxman after you, via goods dealers

Income Tax department on Friday conducted a nationwide survey of over 200 white goods dealers, which include over 20 such dealers in Gujarat, to shortlist buyers of expensive consumers goods and assess their tax liability.

In Ahmedabad and Vadodara nine shops respectively while in Rajkot two renowned television showrooms were surveyed.

In Ahmedabad big dealers like Sales India, Saurashtra Sales, Avon Electronics, Apna Electronics and others, Kiran Televisions and Aden Electronics in Rajkot and in Vadodara the major electronic goods dealers like R A Electronics, Sunscope Enterprises, Kalpana Enterprise, Ravi Corporation, Sales Conner, Muyur Home Appliances, Victory Electronics, Jay Electronics and Gunjan Enterprise were surveyed by IT officials from Friday morning.

Areas covered in Ahmedabad were Ashram Road, Relief Road, Kalupur, C G Road, Satellite and others while IT officials of Vadodara the shops in Khothi and Alkapuri area of city.

IT officials scanned every transaction undertaken during a particular financial year. This survey was a part IT operations to collect the database of customers who purchased highly expensive appliances like a mobile phone of Rs 80,000 or television of Rs 300,000 or washing machine costing Rs 500,000.

One of the authorities of Ravi Corporation in Vadodara claimed that it is not a survey but income tax raid.

The department is scrutinizing the sales transaction where the sales were above Rs 25,000 in Baroda.

Ashish Kanabar, the manager of Victory electronics in Vadodara was well prepared to face the IT authorities as if he was aware of the survey with all its sales books and account books kept open on table.

"We do business in white goods and by white means" claimed Ashish Kanabar. He also said that the IT authority is directly targeting the dealers to know about the sales billing that will allow them to know the names and address of the customer which ultimately go against the customers interest.
