The US Food and Drugs Administration has given its stamp of approval for the Pune-based Chitale Bandhu Mithaiwale.

Rajabhau Chitale, senior partner at Chitale Bandhu Mithaiwale, told Business Standard that the firm is in the process of deciding on the channels through which it could market its brand abroad.

"We have appointed B J Exports to channelise our products to Europe and the US markets," he said.

Rajabhau estimates that the demand for the company's bakarwadi (a spicy snack made of wheat) in the US market at two tonne per day.  "We would prefer to export by the sea route than air. This will save cost," he added.

"We are close to dispatching our first consignment of bakarwadi to the UK. Initially, we are looking at sending two such consignments to the UK, each containing 200-400 kg. Our aim is to sell at least 500 kg per day in the UK," Rajabhau said.

According to Chitale, a pack of 200 gm of bakarwadi would be priced at £1 in UK, whereas in the US a 200 gram pack would be sold for $1.60.

Rajabhau said the unique selling proposition of bakarwadi would be the authentic taste. The company also has plans to open its own outlets in the US. "We are conducting the consumer research and expect to get the reports on where to locate the outlets soon," he said.

Chitale Bandhu has been exporting about 500 kilograms bakarwadi every fortnight to Israel. China and Australia are next in the line.

Domestically, the company has footprints in Goa and Bangalore and will soon reach out to the northern region as well.
