Share of big firms in software exports on the slide

The contribution of large software companies to India's overall software exports has slowed down over the last couple of years, even while the share of mid-sized and small software exporters have shown growth.

According to the latest data compiled by the department of information technology, the share of the 45 companies with exports of over Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) has come down drastically to 60.95 per cent of the overall software exports in 2001-02 from 70.91 per cent in 2000-01.

In 2000-01, there were about 44 companies exporting software worth more than Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion).

Companies with exports revenues of over Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) exported Rs 22,248 crore (Rs 222.48 billion) in 2001-02 as against Rs 19,500 crore (Rs 195 billion) in 2000-01.

But, the share of companies with exports revenues between Rs 50 crore (Rs 500 million) to Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) has gone up to 10.59 per cent in 2001-02 from 7.28 per cent a year ago.

The number of companies exporting software in the range of Rs 50 crore (Rs 500 million) and Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) has also increased to 58 in 2001-02 from 32 a year ago.

The companies with exports of between Rs 50 crore (Rs 500 million) to Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) was Rs 3,866 crore (Rs 38.66 billion) compared to Rs 2000 crore (Rs 20 billion) in 2000-01.

Similarly, contribution of companies, with exports between Rs 10 crore (Rs 100 million) to Rs 50 crore (Rs 500 million) range, to the over all software export basket has also gone up to 14.75 per cent in 2001-02 from 13.37 per cent.

The number of companies in this export range has also increased to 247 in 2001-02 from 204 a year ago. The total exports of companies with exports between Rs 50 crore (Rs 500 million) and Rs 10 crore (Rs 100 million) was Rs 5386 in 2001-02 against Rs 3650 crore (Rs 36.50 million) a year ago.

The significant increase has been seen with the group of companies with exports of Rs 1 crore (Rs 10 million) to Rs 10 crore (Rs 100 million). The share of companies in this range has increased to 11.24 per cent of exports in 2001-02 from 7.28 per cent in 2000-01.

The number of companies in this export group has also increased to 1070 in 2001-02 from 793 in 2000-01.

The share of companies with exports between Rs 1 crore (Rs 10 million) and Rs 10 crore (Rs 100 million) has doubled to Rs 4100 crore (Rs 41 billion) in 2001-02 from Rs 2000 crore (Rs 20 billion) in the last year.

The share of smaller companies with exports of less that Rs 1 crore (Rs 10 million) has also increased to 2.47 per cent in 2001-02 to the overall software exports from 1.27 per cent in 2000-01. The number of companies with exports less than Rs 1 crore (Rs 10 million) has also increased to 1450 in 2001-02 from 1400 in 2000.
