After opening with a positive gap of 25 points at 14,541, the Sensex swung in and out of the positive zone for the major part of the trading day.
The index touched a new all-time intra-day high of 14,565, before tumbling to a low of 14,453 - down 112 points from the peak. The Sensex finally settled with a loss of 38 points at 14,478.
The market breadth was positive - out of 2,727 stocks traded, 1,402 moved up, 1,274 slipped and the rest were unchanged today.
Index movers & shakers
Reliance Communications shed 5% to Rs 489. Hindalco dropped 2% to Rs 174.
HDFC Bank, Hero Honda and Bharti Airtel declined around 1.5% each to Rs 1,084, Rs 719 and Rs 771, respectively.
ITC, Maruti, Tata Steel and HDFC were down around 1% each at Rs 175, Rs 952, Rs 465 and Rs 1,799, respectively.
Reliance Energy soared over 2% to Rs 560. Ranbaxy added 1.4% to Rs 420.
Cipla and ICICI Bank advanced 1% each to Rs 250 and Rs 957, respectively.
Value & volume toppers
TCS topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 910 crore followed by Auto Industries (Rs 230 crore), Shree Ashtavinayak (Rs 200 crore), IFCI (Rs 153.50 crore) and Indiabulls (Rs 152 crore).
IFCI led the volume chart with trades of around five crore shares followed by Reliance Natural Resources (1.95 crore), Himachal Futuristic (1.57 crore), IKF Technologies (1.56 crore) and Tata Teleservices (1.13 crore).
