Sensex sheds 258 points at close

The markets ended in deep red as profit booking set in during the final hours of trade. The BSE Sensex made a hefty loss of  258.44 points and closed at 10,509.53 and the Nifty closed at 3076 down 81 points. The fall was inline with the Asian peers.

The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 5,239.49, down 93 points.

The BSE Midcap Index ended at 4,328.05, down 87 points.

All the BSE sectoral indices were in red. Oil and gas, metal and auto indices were among the top laggards.

Markets today:

-Markets slip on sell-off in late trade; metal, oil stocks drag
-Political concerns weigh on sentiment; divestment process stalled
-Sensex, Nifty down over 2% each after being up over 1% intra-day
-All major sector indices also end in negative territory
-BSE Metals index down 3.5%; SAIL down 5%, Tata Steel down 4.5%
-BSE Oil & Gas index down 3.6%; RIL down 4.8%, HPCL down 4.5%
-BSE Auto index down 2%; Hero Honda down 3.6%, Tata Motors down 3.5%
-BSE FMCG, IT indices down over 2%; ITC down 3.5%, Wipro down 4.5%
-Midcap stocks also slip into the red; NSE CNX Midcap index down 2%
-Market breadth negative; NSE Advance: Decline ratio 1:4
-Total market turnover Rs 33,917.57 cr vs Rs 27,665.12 cr yesterday

The BSE Oil and Gas Index closed down 3.6% at 5,175.18. HPCL, Reliance, BPCL and Kochi Refineries were among the losers.

The BSE Metal Index lost 3.5% at 8,293.92. Hind Zinc, SAIL, Nalco and Tata Steel witnessed selling pressure.

The Auto index closed at 4,643.49 down 2.6%. Bharat Forge, Escorts, Cummins and TVS Motor closed lower

The BSE FMCG Index was down 2.4% at 1,940.96. Shaw Wallace, McDowell, ITC, Britannia and HLL closed in red.

The BSE IT Index was down 2.4% at 3,701.88. Mphasis BFL, Wipro, I-Flex Solution and Moser Baer 

The BSE Capital Goods Index down 1.9% at 6,862.23. Praj Industries, Bharat Elec, Alstom Projects, Thermax and HEG closed lower.

The BSE Consumer Durables Index lost 1.8% at 2,776.24. Whirlpool, Titan Industries, BPL and Su-Raj Diamonds slipped.

The BSE 3,097.71 was down 1.6%. Apollo Hospital, Nicholas Piramal, Dr Reddy's Labs, Orchid Chemical and Matrix Lab ended low.

The BSE Bankex was down 0.7% at 4,368.12. Allahabad Bank, Oriental Bank, Canara Bank, SBI and Bank of Baroda were among the losers.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 6642.5 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 24252.51 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 3022.56 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 33917.57 crore.

-Gainers: NTPC, HLL up 4%, DRL up 2.6%, HDFC, ICICI Bank up 2.2%

-Losers: Wipro down 9%, Hero Honda down 6%, ITC, Hindalco down 4%

-Midcap gainers: Swaraj Mazda up 14.5%, KEC Infra up 14%

-Midcap gainers: Kesoram up 13%, Alembic up 11%, Marico up 11%

-Midcap losers: Essar Oil down 13%, Bannari Sugar down 10%

-Midcap losers: Balrampur Chini down 8%, Kirloskar Oil down 8%
