In what the company described as surprising, Federal officials conducted a search at the headquarters of Ranbaxy Inc in New Jersey on Wednesday.

Agents from the US Food and Drug Administration apparently locked down the US headquarters of the Indian pharmaceutical major as well.

In a brief statement, the company said the action of the federal officials came as a surprise. "The company is not aware of any wrongdoing. It is cooperating fully with the officials," the statement said.

Company officials could not be reached for comment despite repeated attempts. Nobody answered the phone in the corporate communications and government affairs office in New Jersey.

Although the statement said the company's operations continue as normal, a report in Trentonian.com quoted an unnamed Federal agent as saying that a warrant was being served, and that the agent asked its reporter to leave the premises of the company.

Ranbaxy operates in a complex global business environment in one of the most highly competitive and regulated industries.

The search came less than a week after the company announced that it has received final approval from the US Food and Drug Administration to manufacture and market Sertraline Hydrochloride tablets.

"We are pleased to receive this final approval for Sertraline Hydrochloride tablets," said Jim Meehan, vice president of Sales and Marketing for RPI.
