Railways earnings go up despite decline in passenger bookings

The total earnings from passengers during April–November 2014 were Rs 28,510.24 crore (Rs 285.1 billion) as against Rs 24,523.71 crore (Rs 245.23 billion) during the same period last year.

TrainDespite a decline in the number of passenger bookings, Railways has earned Rs 1,00,622 crore (Rs 1,006.22 billion) during April-November 2014 as compared to Rs 89,341.26 crore (Rs 893.41 billion) during the same period last year, registering an increase of 12.63 per cent.

Passenger bookings have come down during this period by 1.43 per cent.

The total number of passenger tickets booked during this period were 5581.33 million compared to 5662.54 million in the same period last year, according to the data by Railway Ministry.

There was, however, a rise of 16.26 per cent in the earnings from passengers.

The total earnings from passengers during April–November 2014 were Rs 28,510.24 crore (Rs 285.1 billion) as against Rs 24,523.71 crore (Rs 245.23 billion) during the same period last year.

The earnings from goods during this period were Rs 67,130.96 crore (Rs 671.3 billion) compared to Rs 60,144.16 crore (Rs 601.44 billion) during the same period last year, showing growth of 11.62 per cent.

The total earnings from other coaching amounted to Rs 2669.55 crore (Rs 26.69 billion) during April–November 2014 compared to Rs 2515.78 crore (Rs 25.15 billion) during the same period last year, registering an increase of 6.11 per cent.

In the suburban section, the number of passengers booked during this period were 3,022 million as compared to 3,028.44 million in the same period last year, a decrease of 0.20 per cent while in the non-surban sector, 2,559.08 million passengers were booked as against 2,634.10 million in the corresponding period last year, registering a decrease of 2.55 per cent.
