Oracle India managing director Shekhar Dasgupta on Tuesday announced his decision to quit the company.
Dasgupta would step down at the end of May 2005 to pursue other interests, a company statement said. "My 12 years at Oracle were filled with challenge, growth and learning. I feel that my experience at Oracle will serve me well as I enter the next phase of my career in academia," Dasgupta said in the statement.
Oracle, however, had not appointed a replacement for Dasgupta and a company spokesperson said an announcement would be made soon.
The spokesperson also said Dasgupta had been thinking about stepping down for a while and his decision was not part of an organisational restructuring exercise.
Having joined the global software major in 1992, Gupta held various positions, including alliances director, before being appointed country manager in March 1998. He was subsequently promoted as the managing director.
Keith Budge, vice-president, Oracle Asia-Pacific, said Dasgupta had been instrumental in enabling Oracle to meet the expectations of more than 6,250 clients in the country.
Prior to joining Oracle India, Gupta worked for eight years with PSI Data Systems (a then affiliate of Group Bull, France).
His was the product marketing manager (mainframes) when he quit PSI. He began his career with the Confederation of Indian Industry, where he worked for over two years as an economist.
