Production of finished aluminium in National Aluminium Company Limited's smelter plant at Orissa's Angul stopped on Friday with its employees going on a strike, protesting the Centre's decision to divest 10 per cent stake of the company.

"The aluminum production from the smelter plant has stopped. We have made temporary arrangements to keep the potline alive," NALCO's executive director U B Patnaik told PTI from Angul.

It was imperative to keep potline running continuously to make the smelter plant function, he said.

The executive director said the employees had agreed to allow 153 executive rank officers and 106 casual workers to run six power plant units, which produced around 650 mw power.

The per day capacity of NALCO's smelter plant is 950 tonnes of finished aluminum metal which was stopped since this morning as the employees were on strike protesting the decision of disinvestment.

The staff strength at NALCO's Angul plant is 4,500 of which 1,100 are in executive rank and rest are workers.
The coordination committee comprising employees of officers' and workers rank and trade unions were expected to meet today to chalk out future strategy.

In its Damanjodi facility, the employees and peripherial development associations had launched the strike on Thursday.
