The dream of transforming Mumbai into a world class city has come a step closer with the Rs 2.25 lakh crore (Rs 2.25 trillion) plan for development of Mumbai Metropolitan Region awaiting approval of the state government.

Minister for State for Urban Development Rajesh Tope informed the Legislative Council during Question Hour that the state government will approve the plan once the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) okays it.

The plan has been designed to improve the city's infrastructure, and includes road transport, Metro rail, skybus, Brimstowad storm water drainage project and water transport development, Tope said.

Lee Consultancy, a private company has made the plan and it covers the Mumbai Metropolitan Region including neighbouring Thane district, he added.

Tope said when the plan is implemented, commuting time within the MMR will be less than an hour and more emphasis will be on mass transport. BJP MLC Sanjay Kelkar alleged development of Thane district has been neglected by the government.

Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said development has to be done by concerned Municipal Corporation and MMRDA is a supplementary organisation.
