Learning has just acquired a new nimbler form.

While e-learning is still being used as a supplementary tool to the conventional forms of learning, a new method of knowledge addition called m-learning has emerged in the global scenario.

M-learning or mobile learning refers to the deployment of training programmes on wireless handheld devices, like cell phones and personal digital assistants. Not many in India would have heard of the m-learning concept, as it requires the use of advanced phones with 3G technology or BlackBerry devices.

However, a Pune-based company, Kalzoom Technologies, has already bagged an international client for m-learning solutions.

"We are in the process of developing m-learning solutions for a Singapore-based company," Kalzoom Technologies chief operating officer Sunderaraman S said. He,

however, declined to divulge the name of the client.

Explaining the concept of m-learning, Sunderaraman said: "It is a just-in-time learning concept for people on the run. It allows them to download learning material while on the move."

So, a company, which deploys it for the benefit of its employees, has a system administrator at the helm of affairs who posts an announcement to a specific group of users, detailing the content that has been framed for such purposes. The content can be in various forms ranging from Q&A to a game or simulation format, which can then be downloaded by the employee as and when required.

According to Sunderaraman, though m-learning may seem as an extension to the e-learning concept, the former requires a lot of detailing. "One needs to decide on the kind of content that can be framed in a downloadable format.
