Larsen & Toubro, as part of a strategy to transform itself into a multinational, has identified information technology, process engineering and project consulting as areas for inorganic or acquisition-led growth.
The conglomerate is scouting for IT companies in the United States and Europe to strengthen its position in the segment.
A M Naik, CEO & managing director of L&T, says a comprehensive strategy involving key ingredients to build a successful global corporation has been put in place.
"L&T Infotech has come a long way from being ranked 50th in India by Nasscom to the 7th position. We have been recognised in the international market with major orders pouring in in a big way. Having reached this platform, growth through acquisition in the IT business is something that we have on our minds now," Naik said.
Naik said the company is keen on some small but extremely high-technology and specialised engineering entities in the US and the company is in the discussion stage for a possible takeover.
L&T is also on the hunt for process engineering companies in the US which could add to its skills portfolio. It has also made its intentions clear on acquiring the state-owned Engineers India Ltd in partnership with the Gas Authority of India, and was likely to bid for Bharat Heavy Electricals when the company comes up for privatisation.
The company is also actively pursuing growth opportunities in the defense equipment manufacturing business.
